Possible Solutions for Slow Speeds
If your Usenet connection seems slower than expected, there are several factors to consider. Below are some adjustments that may help improve performance.
1. Try Using a VPN
If your Internet provider is throttling Usenet traffic, you may experience reduced speeds. Using a VPN can often resolve this issue. The Tweaknews Ultimate + VPN plan includes a VPN that can help bypass speed throttling from your provider.
2. Change Ports
Tweaknews supports connections through the following ports:
-
Non-SSL: 119, 80, 23
-
SSL: 563, 443
If you’re experiencing slow speeds, try switching between these ports. In some cases, your provider may throttle specific ports.
3. Adjust Maximum Connections
Using too many simultaneous connections can sometimes reduce overall performance. In most cases, 10–12 connections are sufficient. If you're using more, try reducing the number in your newsreader and monitoring any improvements.
4. Use a Wired Connection
Wi-Fi connections can introduce interference or signal loss, particularly in environments with many competing networks. If possible, switch to a wired Ethernet connection to help maintain a stable and fast link.
5. Check Your VPN Location
If you are using a VPN, try changing the server location. A server closer to your physical location may offer better speed. Also, choose servers that are less congested, if this option is available in your VPN settings.
6. Test During Off-Peak Hours
Internet traffic varies depending on the time of day. You may experience faster speeds during less congested times. Consider running speed tests at different hours to identify patterns.
7. Temporarily Disable Antivirus or Firewall
Some antivirus or firewall software may interfere with Usenet connections. Try disabling these tools temporarily to see if speeds improve. Be sure to enable them again once testing is complete.
8. Restart Your Equipment
A quick restart of your modem, router, and computer can often resolve intermittent connection problems.
9. Contact Support
If none of these steps improve your speeds, please contact the Tweaknews Helpdesk. Include information about your Internet provider, average speed, current settings, and any testing you’ve done. We’ll be glad to take a closer look.
