NewsLeecher Setup Guide for Tweaknews

NewsLeecher is a popular Windows-based newsreader designed for easy access to Usenet newsgroups. This guide walks through configuring NewsLeecher to work with Tweaknews.

Step 1: Install NewsLeecher

Begin by downloading the latest version of NewsLeecher from the official website.

Follow the installation prompts and launch the application once installed.

Step 2: Configure Tweaknews Server Settings

  1. Open NewsLeecher.

  2. Look at the box on the left side of the screen and click Add Server.

  1. Enter the following:

    • Server Address: news.tweaknews.eu

    • Server Port (found in Advanced Settings): 563 for SSL, or 119 for non-SSL

    • Bots (Connections): Up to 30 (we recommend 20 for most users)

    • Server Requires Login: Checked

    • Username: Your Tweaknews username

    • Password: Your Tweaknews password

    • Choose a Server Nickname: Tweaknews (or any custom label you prefer)

  2. Under Security, enable Use Encrypted Server Connection (SSL) for secure access.

  3. Click OK to save your settings.

Step 3: Configure Group Settings and Connect to Usenet

  1. Click the Connect button in the top left corner of the window.

  2. Go to the Articles tab.

  3. Click the Update button to sync all available newsgroups from the server.

  1. Subscribe to any groups you’d like to browse or search.

  2. Tweaknews provides access to all major Usenet newsgroups with high article retention.

Step 4: Use a Usenet Indexer

NewsLeecher does not include its own Usenet search. For full access, use an NZB-based Usenet Indexer to search for articles and import NZB files into NewsLeecher.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If you're unable to connect, double-check that SSL is enabled and the correct port (563) is selected.

  • Make sure there are no typos in your username or password.

  • Verify your Tweaknews subscription is active.
